Okay we now have a genre bad ass panel, made up of "Xena" Meron, "Death Wish" Sam and most likely "biker" Dave.
Our music panel is punked Alicia, funked Keith and glammed Janet (she's changed her topic)
Our panel by default panel is now Aaina, Ben and Noel. This could be a panel on the star system possibly -- that was one idea that Aaina and I discussed. Ben's paper is certainly star focused, and Noel's paper on black buddy films may well end up being primarily about its black stars, Hollywood's treatment of same, etc. These may actually work nicely together. However, even if Aaina decides to not go toward the star system in India, I'll just think of some other conceptual link.
Genre matters. It especially matters to students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

conference part 2
Okay, here's the three panels as I can currently figure it.
Fantasy Genres/Genre Fantasies -- Meron, Janet, and Aaina (I'm not intentionally making it all girls, but I just couldn't match up Sam or Dave's topics to this panel.
You've Got Male: Genre Machismo -- Ben, Sam and Noel
Keith, Alicia and Dave -- I haven't got the angle fully on this one -- I'll fit it together once I hear more from all three of you guys.
Fantasy Genres/Genre Fantasies -- Meron, Janet, and Aaina (I'm not intentionally making it all girls, but I just couldn't match up Sam or Dave's topics to this panel.

The Genre Matters Conference and proposals
There have been some inquiries regarding what I'm looking for in the papers/proposals. First of all, let's extend the deadline for submission of your proposal to Sunday evening. That gives you the weekend to talk to me further about your specific ideas.
Now, here's what you need to think about: You need to have some keen idea or observation as the theme of your presentation. It should be genre-related. It can deal with historical or contemporary subject matter. It can concern anything in the field of the arts or pop culture -- film, TV, lit, comics, sports, music, etc. It has to be anchored with some theoretical foundation, like Wright, or Warshow if you were doing something on westerns for example.
Here's some examples of topics from past years:
1). P.T. Anderson's films as musicals
2). Charlie Chaplin's Immigration comedies
3). The influence of Luche Libre on American Wrestling
4). Audience Reception theories and The Golden Girls
5). The relationship of sound and image in the genre films of Stanley Kubrick
6). A structural analysis of the "teen" film.
7). A critique of white director's use of Pam Grier
8). Cyborg theory in Anime
9). The visual excess of Warhol's Dracula.
10). The "other": Race in 1970s horror films.
What I expect from you are close to graduate school level conference papers/presentations. To get a sense of what a conference panel entails, check out prior Society of Cinema and Media Studies conferences here. This may give you some ideas.
Here's a clue: Pick a subject you like. If you like Disney movies for example, let's start there. Then pick an area of academic interest: gender, race, class, spectatorship, the body, sexuality, economics, other film theory, authorship, etc. Let's say gender. You could look at the villains, the missing mothers, or the Disney princesses. Let's go with princesses. I'm going to go do a little google research now ... okay, I'm back. There's a new black princess coming. About time, since we've already covered Chinese, Native American, Iraqi, etc. Well, apparently "princesses" has become the major Disney product/merchandising franchise -- there are now nine "princesses." Okay, from this point the paper practically writes itself. Just an example.
Hope to see you guys tonight!

Conference Poster
Yo ladies and gentlemen, just wanted to throw this out there for discussion and thoughts...
Jim and I were talking about what we could do for the Genre Matters conference poster. I think it would be great if we could get as many people in the program as we can involved with the poster process.
We were throwing around the idea of dressing up in costumes... so say someone is a detective, a super hero, a cowboy, robot, etc etc, and all being in one frame.
I know we all have a ton of work, and that everyone is super stressed, but if you have any interest in doing this or have any ideas, the final product will be way better with any ideas you may have.
Just something to think about.
What genre would you like to be?

Hi, Jim joining in on Alicia's post. I thought we could do a photo along this line -- (I just mean in terms of stance, etc,) with students dressed as students but with some genre accoutrements layered over it, kind of Brick style. What do y'all think? I'm sure Alicia can nail the photo and we can get the props without much trouble. Then it's just a matter of photoshop. We could have a word balloon that said Genre Matters VII.
