LA Neighborhood Helper.

LA4beginners has a nice site detailing various LA neighborhoods and providing map links. When thinking about housing, especially in terms of proximity to internships and USC, this might be very useful.

Reposting of a car shipping suggestion

I'm also reprinting a 2007 student's comments on both Park LaBrea and on car shipping. That's two strong endorsements for DAS

"I did Duke in LA last year and I just wanted to let this year's class know about Park La Brea if you're still looking for places to live. I lived there and would highly recommend it. I lived in one of the "towers" (high-rise apartments) and shared a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with another Duke in LA-er. Each of us paid a little over $1,000 per month in rent, but that is pretty standard for most places you'll find anywhere in LA. There are townhomes that are cheaper and you can probably fit 4 people in a two-bedroom unit (or 2 people in a one-bedroom, I don't know if you would want to put up to 6 in a 3-bedroom). Park La Brea is an extremely safe, gated community with 24 hour security and guaranteed parking if you're worried about finding a safe place to live. It is in a really nice part of LA with the Grove, LACMA, and a nice park with basketball courts all across the street. My internship was in Santa Monica and it took me only 20 minutes to get there (I was able to leave right as rush hour was ending) and it only took 20-25 minutes to get to USC at pretty much any time of day. It's hard to be centrally located in LA, but I would have to say that Park La Brea is pretty central, especially for where you will be having to go. They're very helpful with signing a lease from across the country and I had a great experience living there.

If you are going to ship a car, I would recommend using Dependable Auto Shippers. I shipped my car to LA from Charleston, SC and back again and I used them both times. They got the car there and back safely, quickly, and relatively cheaply. Here's their website: http://www.dasautoshippers.com/?EADID=001DependableAutoShipper

Feel free to contact me (bz2@duke.edu) if you have any questions about living, car shipping, or anything else."

Affordable Shipping

This was a student's post from last year that I'm reprinting for obvious reasons.

"I found an affordable car shipping company called Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS). I quoted my car and received an unbelievable estimate price of $688 for a port to port auto ship from Greensboro, North Carolina to Gardena, California, which is 14 miles from Los Angeles. Though the cheapest quote you can get is from port to port auto shipping, DAS offers door to door service as well. Also, this company appears to be very legit. DAS can provide 24 hour online satellite tracking of your car while its traveling to LA."

Parking and more

This site has good USC parking info, but it's really the "go to" site for other transportation questions as well, especially the links page, which covers the bus companies, the DMV, etc. It will save you a lot of google time.

Is a car essential?

Most, or all, of you will have cars this semester, and it definitely helps ... BUT we have much better public transportation than is widely believed and you can get by without a car. For more info, click the above picture. There's also a link there on getting a metro pass.

CARS

I did some checking and have had no luck finding any car rental agency, no matter how small, willing or able to lease a car to anyone under 25.

What I can offer though is this -- If you decide you want to purchase a temporary car while here, give me the size, model preferences, range in years, etc., and a price range and my mechanic and some other car sources will make some inquiries and try to find you the best car for the money before you arrive -- if that helps.

Car info

Here's all the transportation information you may need:

1). You don't have to have a car to do Duke in LA. If you don't intend to have a car, scroll down to the November blog post showing the metro pass. It will lnk you to much valuable public transportation information. Living on or around USC campus is definitely a major option if you are not going to have a car, in that it is close to public transportation.

2). If you intend to have a car, here are options:

a). Drive your's out here. This is in some ways the cheapest option. Parents often worry however about cross-country drives. Options are for you to ask one of the students who is not bringing their car, or already has one, etc. to ride with you. That may be attractive to some students who can then bring more stuff with them. I have also had students do convoys where they keep track of each other via cell phones and stay in the same places, stop and eat together, etc. Finally, some parents go on the road trip and help with the drive and then with the apartment search.
b). Transport/ship your car.
c). Buy a car once you arrive. Anyone interested in doing so, I have posted earlier an excellent mechanic who you might want to have look over any car prior to purchase. If you have a price range, and car type in mind, let me know and I will send out inquiries. I have clients who may be helpful in the car pursuit.
d). Car lease/rentals. I am checking with someone today -- look for future posts on any help I can provide reL car rental. The problem is often age restrictions, but I'm working it.

Then once that's decided, you have to think about USC parking. If you are only on campus a couple of days a week, or if you are car-pooling, a parking pass probably doesn't make sense. If you are on campus 3 -4 days of the week, then it might be worth investigating. The parking lot closest for students going to Lucas, Carson, or Norris is probalby Lot B, just north of Vermont, entrance off Jefferson.

Los Angeles without a car

My impression is that most, or all, of you will have cars this semester, and it definitely helps ... BUT as this website points out, we have much better public transportation than is widely believed and the mapping system on this site is very helpful/accessible. There's also a link from there on getting a metro pass. For more info, go to: http://www.experiencela.com/GA.html
