Here's all the transportation information you may need:
1). You don't have to have a car to do Duke in LA. If you don't intend to have a car, scroll down to the November blog post showing the metro pass. It will lnk you to much valuable public transportation information. Living on or around USC campus is definitely a major option if you are not going to have a car, in that it is close to public transportation.
2). If you intend to have a car, here are options:
a). Drive your's out here. This is in some ways the cheapest option. Parents often worry however about cross-country drives. Options are for you to ask one of the students who is not bringing their car, or already has one, etc. to ride with you. That may be attractive to some students who can then bring more stuff with them. I have also had students do convoys where they keep track of each other via cell phones and stay in the same places, stop and eat together, etc. Finally, some parents go on the road trip and help with the drive and then with the apartment search.
b). Transport/ship your car.
c). Buy a car once you arrive. Anyone interested in doing so, I have posted earlier an excellent mechanic who you might want to have look over any car prior to purchase. If you have a price range, and car type in mind, let me know and I will send out inquiries. I have clients who may be helpful in the car pursuit.
d). Car lease/rentals. I am checking with someone today -- look for future posts on any help I can provide reL car rental. The problem is often age restrictions, but I'm working it.
Then once that's decided, you have to think about USC parking. If you are only on campus a couple of days a week, or if you are car-pooling, a parking pass probably doesn't make sense. If you are on campus 3 -4 days of the week, then it might be worth investigating. The parking lot closest for students going to Lucas, Carson, or Norris is probalby Lot B, just north of Vermont, entrance off Jefferson.
