Genre matters. It especially matters to students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

Internships
Hey guys, I know this is a lot to ask, but I need you to post here what your internship is and a couple of sentences about your experience thus far. Since I'm reading your journals, this is obviously not for me, but is for the people back home at Duke. Thanks, I appreciate a prompt response to this. And remember, unlike blackboard, this blog is open to the public.

I am interning at Scott Free Productions in West Hollywood. I generally have an extremely busy day runing errands, doing script/book coverage, office stuff, and occasionally I get to work on an interesting project. For example, I got to spend the day with Arthur Max, production designer of Gladiator on a new film. I put up an array of location photos to prepare for a meeting between studio executives and Ridley Scott concerning this new film. At one point, Leonardo DiCaprio came in for a meeting. Everyday is up in the air in terms of eventfulness, but there's always something to see, such as the editors of American Gangster busy at work, or whatever industry people come in for meetings that day.
I am interning at aLine media in Santa Monica. It's a boutique public relations firm that focuses on fashion and events. Most clients are designers, but other clients include restaurant groups, new spas, different websites, etc. A major focus of aLine is planning individual events: Showtime movie release parties, Awards show gifting suites, independent film screenings. A major part of the job is helping out at these events. In the office, I do a lot of work with creating press pieces and contacting various people about upcoming events as well as documenting brand placement in magazines.
The perks of the job are fun. I get to go to a lot of awesome places and great restaurants in LA that I may otherwise have not discovered! One of the first things I got to do was go to a Golden Globe gifting suite held at an old Hollywood mansion to help out one of our clients who was set up there. It's a spectacular environment to learn exactly how PR works, very intimate interaction (because it's boutique PR) and fast- paced.
I am interning at Echo Lake Production which is a pretty successful medium-sized independent film company in Beverly Hills. They've produced movies like Tsotsi, which one last year's Oscar for best foreign film, and were nominated this year in the same category for Water. They focus on international films. So far the experience has been pretty interesting but also very demanding. I've been doing lots of script coverage which is awesome because you get to read some pretty interesting scripts. I've also been doing research, handling phones, and other normal office duties. Some of the really cool things is sitting in on development meetings or presenting at weekend read meetings in which we discuss the scripts we read over the weekend. There have also been some cool perks like talking to John Carpenter on the phone! It's definitely fast-paced and longs hours(9-7!) but I already feel like I've been learning a lot. The internship experience is super important for our LA experience.
I am interning at Beacon Pictures in Santa Monica. I get to read scripts and do coverage, which is great because I get to see what kind of material is coming in and out of the office. I also do a lot of general office work, like printing and copying. The main people I interact with are the assistants who also read scripts and answer phones. I answered phones one day for a producer and it was actually a great experience because I got to listen in on the conversations she was having and see a little bit of how business gets done. Mostly though, I just read scripts and do general office work.
