Genre matters. It especially matters to students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

Your Interests -- Mandatory Responses Due
In terms of planning field trips, looking out for blog posts, and gearing the semester toward various areas of pop culture, I need to know more about this year's class. Therefore, I'm going to ask each of you to please respond to this question.
Are you interested in:
1). Film (and name genres and favorites)
2). TV (and name your must-see shows)
3). Comics, including manga, web, etc. (which ones)
4) Games (and name format, i.e. Playstation, on-line World of Warcraft, etc.)
5). Music (and specify, i.e. jazz, blues, etc)
6) Sports (specify areas of interest, except for Duke basketball)
7) Art
8) Other interests, hobbies, etc.
9) Animation/Anime/Cartoons (which ones)
I also need to know which of you have
strong computer and/or design skills. Each year one of you (or a team) designs the poster for the conference. Examples of prior years are posted on this blog beneath all of the links on the side. This year we launch our official cyber-journal where we'll be publishing your final papers and I need to know potential designers, layout people and editors, etc. We have a lot of collaborative work for the Duke LA courses so let's start figuring outhow deep our talent pool runs.

1). Film (and name genres and favorites)
Yes, I love movies!! I hate horror because I get super scared super easily, but I like psychological thrillers, as well as romantic comedies, drama, and just comedies in general. My favorites that I can think off the top of my head include Sleepless in Seattle, Legally Blonde, Love Actually, Shawshank Redemption, Amelie, and Super Troopers.
2). TV (and name your must-see shows)
I don't watch that much television now, but my all-time favorite shows were reruns of Three's Company, All in the Family, and Charlie's Angels. I also like cartoons like Family Guy and The Fairly Oddparents.
3). Comics, including manga, web, etc. (which ones)
I don't read comics at all--but I liked the Spiderman movies?
4) Games (and name format, i.e. Playstation, on-line World of Warcraft, etc.)
I wasn't allowed to play videogames as a kid, but I do enjoy playing 2D Nintendo Super Mario and Mario Kart haha
5). Music (and specify, i.e. jazz, blues, etc)
I have very eclectic tastes in music: I love smooth jazz (94.7 the wave holla!!!), all Christmas songs/music, country, hip hop, and Asian music (since I'm from Taiwan).
6) Sports (specify areas of interest, except for Duke basketball)
I'm not really that into sports--I am into Duke basketball though hahahahahahhahahah. I don't like watching golf but I know a lot about it since I used to be a golf player. I'm a huge USC football fan, but that's about it.
7) Art
I'm not an artsy person. Art bores me.
8) Other interests, hobbies, etc.
I LOVE going shopping!!! It's my favorite thing to do and I also love eating good food in LA...I like driving around, especially to the top of Mulholland and looking at the view of LA at night. I love hanging out with friends and having a good time, oh and I love meeting/sighting celebrities :)
9) Animation/Anime/Cartoons (which ones)
Not really into the whole Japanese anime stuff, but I love Family Guy, Fairly Oddparents, and all the Tex Avery shorts.
Oh sorry and I forgot to add that I have absolutely no computer-design skills whatsoever, so I unfortunately will not be able to help out with designing anything :(
