The Books

Besides the Course Reader, here's the other required books for the course:

Altman, Rick. Film/Genre. Indiana University Press (1999). (It may come to the Bookstore -- but it also may not, there appear to be available copies via Amazon online -- click the title) You're going to need this book for the final exam and it would be best to get this one ASAP).

Hebdige, Dick. Subculture: the meaning of style. Routledge (1991). (It's readily available at the USC Bookstore)

Koslowski, Rich. Three Fingers. Top Shelf Productions (2002) (It may come to the Bookstore, it can also be purchased at most comic book stores around town and there appear to be available copies via Barnes and Noble online -- click the title)

Mittell, Jason. Genre and Television: From Cop Shows to Cartoons in American Culture. Routledge (2004).(It's readily available at the USC Bookstore)

Moore, Alan and Dave Gibbons. Watchmen. Warner Books (1995). (Here's the thing about Watchmen. It's not out of print, but amazon and others pretend there's only the hardcover Absolute edition still available. You don't want that, you just want the paperback edition. It's available at any comic store -- but you'll need to go somewhere to personally pick this one up.)

Seagle, Steven T. and Teddy Kristiansen. It’s a Bird … Vertigo (2004). (It may come to the Bookstore, it can also be purchased at most comic book stores around town and there appear to be available copies via Amazon online -- click the title)

A word about the three graphic novels on the list -- I can order them thru my own supplier in Culver City and we can stop there when we go to our play in a few weeks. If you want me to do this, I need to know a head count as soon as possible. That seems the easiest method, especially for The Watchmen, and would be a good learning experience for you as well -- we'd take a gander at the shelves.

Going to the comic store works for me. It's been awhile since I've been in one.

Hi Jim,

Top Shelf employee here, just passing through on a blog search. You're right, THREE FINGERS is unfortunately out of stock right now at Top Shelf HQ and also at Amazon. WATCHMEN, on the other hand, is definitely in stock at Amazon (and everywhere else -- there's a movie coming up, after all!) in both paperback and Absolute editions. You're looking for ISBN 0930289234 (or 978-0930289232 in ISBN-13) for the paperback.

Best of luck with the class!

Hey Jim, can you order me a copy of the Watchmen as well? I'm pretty sure I got the rest from Amazon.
