So I was doing my genre-watch and I came across this article in Spin about a Toronto based band called Crystle Castle. They're described as a cyber-punk duo. I'm not even 100% sure what genre that is, but after looking it up on wikipedia apparently it is a science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life" and a type of industrial music. Postmodernism anyone? This band is as post modern as it can get. They're known to use esoteric instrumentation on their songs like an Atari 5200 video game system synthesizer and have remixed songs for bands like GoodBooks, Bloc Party, and the Klaxons. They're big videogame fans and incorporate it into their music. Their sound is described as fresh and new by many. So this raises the question, is this where music genres are headed in general, reprocessing of different facets of our culture into different contexts for different purposes? Using pop culture as the paint on their canvas? You decide for yourself.
