In this recent SPIN magazine feature the writer discusses the contrast between the humble beginnings of the most seminal American early punk band, the Ramones, and their DIY ethic and lack of major sales during their tenure, with the booming business which is now being seen from the merchandising of their gear. Ramones merchandise is selling like hotcakes and they're making everything from Ramones flip flops to Ramones board shorts. It seems like this goes against the spirit of what the band was all about when they started playing almost 40 years ago in dingy dive bars and making their own tshirts in their garage. This is also interesting considering most of the band is dead now that they're now seeing so much financial success and acclaim. It kind of reminds me of Van Goh or something like that. The artist that lives in poverty and obscurity for most of his life and then becomes a legend after they die, unable to receive any of the worldly benefits from their work. This reminds me of our discussion in class Friday about the nature of celebrity, and our obsession with it. It seems that death is always more interesting for people, especially when a celebrity is involved. Death often turns celebrities into mythic figures, their lives shrouded in mystery, the very mystery or unfamiliarity that can sell Ramones t-shirts or James Dean posters. I just think it is interesting to see what kind of monster is created by celebrity death and all the misinformation associated with it.
Yeah, this is true. Also, the image of the punk counterculture among other subcultures has become mainstream now and is heavily marketed by large corporations as the face of cool, which sells them more tshirts or vintage clothes or whatever they're trying to hawk to rich suburban kids.
