There is a great feature article in the February 2o11 GQ issue about the Hollywood studio system and the audience. It's called "The Day The Movies Died" by Mark Harris. It's an examination of the genres that are popular today and why that is. The author hypothesizes that the genre studio movies area mainly just a response to what the audience wants. His main argument is that Hollywood isn't in any hurry of making any creative or original movie, instead they want something that already has a franchise. He talks about how the studio never thought Inception would succeed the way it did. At first, the studio invested in Inception to appease Chris Nolan so that he would continue making Batman 3. However, Inception 2 or 3 would be a breeze to get funding for, especially if it's 3D, heh.
Overall, relevant extension of what we are discussing in class and extremely interesting to read.
Above is one of the pages of the article. The full article is not online, otherwise I would post the whole thing.
