Genre matters. It especially matters to
students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether
in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

What was NOIR again?
We touched briefly on film noir in class and I gave a fairly quick history. For a further relatively brief review, read more here.
Fascinating that film noir began as a sort of meeting place between the US and Germany while the two countries were at war with each other.
This idea that genre is so economically motivated keeps bringing up in my mind this image of Hollywood as stock market. All these studios and writers and producers in a frenzy to grab the "kind of story" that seems to be making the most so they can push it into their own repertoire. It definitely turns the typical notion of total control on the production end, on its head.
