Genre matters. It especially matters to
students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether
in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

Lucy Liu as Watson in CBS's Sherlock Holmes remake! Thoughts?
I'm so excited about and intrigued by this casting choice! It's also been super interesting to read the various internet reactions to this news. By coming on the heels of the BBC modern-day Sherlock's rise in popularity, this CBS show already garnered a lot of skepticism and criticism from the former show's fanbase. Some see Lucy's casting as CBS's way to definitively differentiate their show from the BBC version. Others see Lucy's casting as a tool to draw in viewers out of sheer curiosity. I have also seen arguments that CBS wants a female Watson in order to avoid any homophobic implications of Sherlock's and Watson's relationship. I really really hope homophobia did not play a part in the casting. I suppose we'll have to tune in ourselves to see how this casting plays out. I just hope it turns out to be a great minority female role.
