The MPAA is quite fascinating to me...how does one create an organization in charge of monitoring and enforcing "ethical" content when ethics are still such a subject of debate and even the humans in the MPAA are prone to err themselves. Hell, some of the MPAA papers I had to read about Johnny Guitar for my paper were preposterous in their blatant sexism and double standard, saying that Vienna could not be sexually promiscuous because she's a woman, but not saying anything about Johnny Guitar's promiscuity.
Anyway, this quirky article summarizes how I see the ratings system as well...as slightly laughable for having a "one-size-fits-all" system which actually don't work, according to empirical studies I've had to read for my comm class (it's called the "forbidden fruit" effect, so a rated R movie would actually attract more people). I think a PG-13 or R rating would definitely help this movie, whereas a PG rating would dramatically hurt it.
I have a friend who works in censorship at Disney Animation, and she has some hilarious stories about having to pull full episodes simply for a geographic background feature looking "too phallic" (but seriously, what mountain doesn't look phallic?).
