Grammy night - EW

In light of today being the Grammys my first genre post will be music related, but will be followed by film genre analysis. Frank Ocean is an up and coming artist in the R&B scene, but many people are not sure what to call him. His contemporaries have linked him to both Kurt Cobain and Jay-Z. His a singer and a hip-hop artist, which apparently is a well defined border in the music world.
What is most conflicting for fellow rappers, but welcomed as a gift from audiences and critics, is Frank Ocean's slightly different personal life. He was displaced by Hurricane Katrina, thus has a unique background to write about. But more interesting is that Frank Ocean is gay. He tweeted about his falling in love with another man, which immediately made people reflect on the typically anti-gay nature of hip-hop. For the most part, this move has been widely thanked by music lovers. Does this contribute to the unclear definition of his genre? Does his rapping/singing, about something other than "f***ing b****es" separate him from the entire hip-hop genre? Probably not. In all reality, he has created a breath of fresh air within the hip-hop genre, but it does make one think about all the rappers that have tried to assert their masculinity but demeaning women.
