Genre matters. It especially matters to students in the Duke in Los Angeles program where we study all things genre, whether in film, television, music, gaming, or comics. Los Angeles also matters, and this site should also share helpful information about what to do while staying in Los Angeles.

F. Scott feat. Jay-Z
Baz Luhrmann announces Jay-Z as the composer for 'The Great Gatsby' soundtrack!
Baz is no stranger to bringing period pieces into contemporary relevance. In fact, most of his films have been period pieces, most notably: 'Romeo + Juliet', 'Moulin Rouge!', and 'Australia'. A modern soundtrack is a subtle way to bridge the present and the past -- transporting the audience to a world that feels both tantalizingly alien as well as evocatively personal.
Could contemporary music be a new characteristic of the period-piece genre? Judging from trailers alone, we see hip-hop music woven into other 2013 films set in an earlier period: '42', 'Django', & 'Gangster Squad'.
The upbeat hip-hop of fourteen-time Grammy winner will certainly liven up this re-telling of Fitzgerald's classic. From this alone, I'm expecting this version to be a significant improvement from 1974 version!
