Game of Thrones: A "Sprawling Epic"

The LA Times suggests that HBO's "Game of Thrones" has redefined the genre of a "sprawling epic." The paper compares it to Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."  Both of these were more "compact and streamlined."

The television series, "Game of Thrones," seems to out do its predecessors in terms of "sprawl" and "epic." LA Times states, "And as Season 3 opens, the sprawl factor is perilously high, with the multitudinous characters — seven families, people, from seven kingdoms — scattered all over Westeros, their story lines progressing in an ever-climbing wall of overlapping layers, a citadel of narrative."

It will be interesting to see how this series plays out and how "Game of Thrones" redefines the sprawling epic genre.
