New Latino Media: Trend or Genre?

The LA Times reports that CNN Latino has expanded into New York, Phoenix, Orlando, and Tampa.  In addition to the news, Time Warner Inc. has created a block from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. that provides programming intended for the Latino audience.  Some of these programs include celebrity news "Showbiz Latino," lifestyle content "Magazine CNN," and sports shows "Deportes USA" and "Cruzando Fronteras."

Previously Univision and Telemundo were the main providers for the Spanish-speaking audience.  Now Time Warner Inc. is trying to provide more options for this audience.

Time Warner's seems to be using television content that is already popular in the U.S.  The only difference is that they are providing more coverage of Latino celebrities and providing it through Spanish-speaking talk show hosts.  This seems like a very different genre of media than the classic dramas that Telemundo produces.  It will be interesting to see how this new media content develops.
