Monsters: The New Star-Crossed Lovers

The LA Times writes about a new formula that studios are using.  It's a twist on Shakespeare's star-crossed lover motif, and it is drawing many teenage girls to the box office.  Elements of this adapted genre include (1) a coming of age story, (2) a strong female protagonist, (3) romance, and (4) the supernatural.

The LA Times writes that studios are using this genre to fill the gap (between Twilight's release and the opening of the second Hunger Game film).  Between this time period, studios intend to draw teenagers to the box office with "Warm Bodies,""The Host," and "Beautiful Creatures."  These films have been produced on a smaller budget to fill in the void.

Director of "Warm Bodies," Jonathan Levine, states that the biggest challenge for making these movies is having a convincing romance.  He says, "You have to earn romance more than anything else." He states that it is the complexity of these relationships that teenagers can relate to, along with the imaginative supernatural aspect that they are drawn to.

It will be interesting to follow these films to see how the genre develops.
